Saturday, March 21st: I had the honor of receiving the 2026 Italofonia Award from the Dante Alighieri Society of Düsseldorf for my novel, C’era una volta a Roma (Once Upon a Time in Rome). This recognition was a balm for the soul; it spoke to my deep gratitude for being Italian and the privilege of writing in such a luminous mother tongue, reflections that stayed with me throughout the writing of this book during the pandemic. It was an extraordinary evening, made even more special by the readings of Giorgio Colangeli, a moving, unexpected surprise and a wonderful gift from the Society, and the talented young actress Kim Scheele. Together, they read a passage from Chapter V in both Italian and German. Can you imagine a writer’s joy in hearing their words interpreted and transfigured by an actor? If not, try to envision it... it is truly a gift! My deepest thanks go to Beatrice Santini, President of the Dante Alighieri Society of Düsseldorf, who envisioned this award to promote Italian culture worldwide, specifically through the works of writers living abroad. I would also like to thank:
Finally, to the readers who gathered around me at the end of the night for such an unforgettable human exchange: TO EVERYONE, ENJOY THE JOURNEY INTO THE 1960s! Thank you all,
